Today’s ModKat Top Entry litter box review looks at one of the more popular large litterboxes on the market. Top-entry litter boxes can be an ideal solution for a lot of households. They’re great when you have a cat (or multiple) who has a habit of kicking their litter out of the box and all over your floors.

Top-entry litter boxes also help to minimize odor, by locking any unwanted cat pee smells behind four tall walls and a roof. Plus, you get to minimize the somewhat unattractive appearance of used litter in your home. The question is, how good is the top-entry litter box from ModKat?

ModKat flip litter box has a reputation of being one of the more reliable litter box companies on the market. The brand produces high-quality bathrooms for your furry friends, using sturdy, strong materials, designed to look elegant and modern. Let’s take a closer look at the ModKat top entry litter box.

What is the ModKat Top-Entry Litter Box?

Let’s start with a basic introduction.

The ModKat Top Entry Litter box is a sleek, cube-shaped litterbox with curved edges. Unlike the standard litter box, the ModKat product is almost entirely enclosed, with only a single entrance point at the top. The top of the litter box platform has a grate covering, designed to improve airflow, and a hole large enough to allow your kitty to jump in and out.

The design of the Top-Entry litter box from ModKat is both practical and stylish. Available in a selection of colors, the product can essentially slot into any corner or space in your home like a stylish piece of furniture. This product doesn’t look like a traditional litterbox, and it doesn’t allow visitors an insight into your kitty’s bathroom habits, so it helps to keep the home looking neat.

At the same time, the Top Entry box reduces litter scatter and eliminates the risk of your kitty kicking litter out of the box when they’re going to the bathroom, which can be ideal for certain cats. The cat simply jumps in through the hole in the top of the lid and jumps out when they’re done.

If you have a cat who likes a little privacy when they’re going to the bathroom, this could be the perfect litter box for you. Features include:

  • Sleek, modern, and enclosed design.
  • Hinged lid which swings open and closed for cleaning.
  • Top grate for air circulation (and to remove stuck litter from cat paws)
  • Reusable strong linger with wireframe fit for the box
  • Multiple color options
  • Ergonomic grip scoop with a storage hook on the side

ModKat Top Entry Litter Box Review: The Features

The ModKat Top Entry litter box has a number of fantastic and attractive features for today’s kitty lovers. Let’s look at each of the features in closer detail.

The size

The size of the ModKat litter box is around 16 inches wide, by 16 inches deep, with a 15-inch height. The entry opening hole is around 8.5 inches across, providing adequate space for a standard cat to jump in and out.

While one of my cats loves this litter box, the other (a Maine Coon) struggles to jump in. It’s worth keeping in mind that this box might not be large enough for some felines.

You may also find that a larger cat jumps in and out multiple times to complete its “bathroom” process. Mine tends to jump in, do their business, jump out, then jump back in to ensure everything’s properly covered up.

If you have a larger cat, they might feel a little “hemmed in” with this litter box, so it’s worth paying attention to your cat’s litterbox preferences before you invest. On the plus side, the somewhat compact size of the litter box means it can easily slide into the corner of most rooms in any home without taking up too much space.

The Swivel Lid

The lid of the ModKat Top Entry litter box might not seem particularly impressive at first – but it’s actually one of the cleverest features. The lid, which is secured to the box by a hinge, can swing open and closed fully when you need to clean out the litter. This means you don’t have to worry about trying to navigate a scoop through the hole your cat uses.

The grate-style lid also has little holes all over the top, which is handy if your cat tends to climb out onto the top of the box before jumping straight to your carpet. This texture helps to remove any litter which might be sticking to your cat’s paws, to reduce tracking. It also means your cat can enjoy some fresh air when doing their business.

The biggest issue I have with this lid is when my cat sits on top of the box to try and do his business through the hole, the lid can end up covered in spray, and it’s not the easiest to clean. However, unless you have an unusual cat like mine, this shouldn’t be an issue.

The Reusable liner

If you prefer to use cat litter box liners in your cat litter boxes to help, get rid of the litter when you need to replace and refresh the box, then you’re in luck. The ModKat Top-Entry cat litter box comes with a handy reusable liner, which sits at the bottom of the box, and has a wireframe to stop it from getting messed up by your cat’s paws.

Unlike a standard liner, this bag is actually really strong and durable, so you shouldn’t have to worry about your kitty clawing through it accidentally. You’ll also be able to easily rinse the liner out with some hot water every time you want to reuse it. ModKat suggests fully cleaning the liner in your box around once every 3 months.

The Scoop

The reusable liner isn’t the only “freebie” you’ll see included with your ModKat Top Entry litter box. The kit also comes with its own ergonomically designed scoop. The scoop is supposed to be easy to grip, so you can get rid of any waste within the box as quickly as possible. I wasn’t sure how this product was any different to a standard scoop, but it worked fine.

One particularly useful feature is the hook on the side of the litterbox, where you can hang your scoop in between uses. This is an excellent way to ensure you have somewhere to keep your scoop where it’s not going to get anything messy.

Odor control

Top-Entry litter boxes are pretty great when it comes to odor control. With fewer “open points” around the box, there’s less opportunity for the smells of your cat’s bathroom habits to seep out into the surrounding room. However, there’s nothing particularly special about the ModKat box designed to prevent odor

If you’re used to using a Top-Entry box, the odor control of this one will be about what you expect. However, it’s worth being mindful about how often you change the litter liner. Though the material isn’t designed to soak up any smells, it can create a bit of a lingering odor if you don’t clean it often enough.

Cleaning

Being able to clean a litter box easily is always important. The ModKat Top Entry litter box includes a number of features to help simplify this process for you. For instance, the included scoop is pretty effective at picking up litter. What’s more, the top part of the box is particularly good at minimizing tracking and scatter.

Disposing of the litter you want to change is pretty straightforward too, thanks to the included litter liner in the box. Even when using finer liter, you’ll be able to simply pull the liner out of the box and dump everything out at once.

If you’re not using the litter liner, unfortunately, you’re in for a bit of a struggle. The shape of the To-Entry litter box can make it very difficult to get all of the mess out of every corner of the box without having to basically tip yourself into the litter tray. It’s easy for the mess to gather around the corners.

You might also find you have a bit of trouble when it comes to actually keep track of how much litter you should have in your box. I found myself accidentally adding too much because I wasn’t able to gauge the depth as easily as I would with other litter trays.

Do Cats Like the ModKat Top-Entry Litter Box?

My cats had mixed responses to this box. The one I had hoped would use it, does. He had a habit of kicking litter out of the tray previously and tends to stand up when going to the bathroom, which can lead to a lot of urine spray all over the walls if I didn’t have a litter tray with high enough sides. However, since he’s a bit of a larger cat, he doesn’t always like going all the way into the box.

My much larger cat (the Maine Coon) seems to prefer to avoid this box completely, but he doesn’t like being cooped up in spaces, so it makes sense he wouldn’t like the high walls. Saying that, there are thousands of positive reviews for this litter box online, so it’s fair to say there must be a pretty large number of cats who appreciate its unique design.

I think if you’ve got a regular-sized cat, this could be an ideal way to give them some privacy when they go to the bathroom. It’s perfect for cats who track and kick a lot of litter around when they use a litter box, and it’s also ideal for cats who stand when going to the bathroom.

Cat owners will definitely appreciate this box as much, if not more than their furry friends. The ModKat Top Entry litter box is a lot more attractive to look at than your standard litter tray. It doesn’t create as much of a mess in your home, and it fits neatly into virtually any room of the house. Plus, you’re likely to appreciate the fact you can’t see the mess your kitties are leaving behind.

Is the ModKat Top Entry Litter Box Worth It?

Whether or not you consider the ModKat Top Entry litter box to be “worth it” will depend on a number of factors. The price of this box is pretty steep. You’re paying for high-quality materials, like extremely strong, durable plastic, as well as an attractive design. The cost evens out at just under $100, which is quite a lot for a box that doesn’t do any scooping for you.

It’s also worth remembering that the reusable litter tray liners will need to be replaced somewhat frequently. You’ll need to remove the liner around once every three months, which means buying another $30 three-pack from the ModKat store.

If you’re worried about the size of the ModKat Top-Entry box for a larger cat, you can also get an XL version, which adds around $50 to the price. Again, this does seem quite costly, but it’s something I’m considering for my own cat, to help with his larger size.

Despite the somewhat expensive price tag, the ModKat Top-Entry box could definitely be a worthwhile investment for some cat owners. If you have a feline friend who tends to be quite messy, or kicks his litter everywhere, this could be the ideal solution you’ve been searching for.

Plus, there are a lot of cat owners out there who will likely appreciate this litter box for its stunning appearance. Not only do you get a modern finish, but you get an opportunity to actually hide the unwanted messes your cats make from views.

However, the ModKat does have its downsides. It’s not ideal for larger cats, and it can make it somewhat difficult for your cat to move around in some cases. You might also find it’s a little harder to clean this box than other, front-entry versions.

FAQ

Why should I use a top entry litter box?

Top entry boxes can have a number of benefits. They hide the sight of your cat poops from sight, which is great if you want to keep your home looking neat. These products are also excellent for preventing litter tracking and scatter. If you have a dog in the home, it will also stop the pup from getting inside of the litter box.

How do I introduce a top entry box to my cat?

Most cats will naturally be intrigued by the box shape of the litter tray, so they’ll be likely to get in and explore themselves. You can always simply place your cat in the litter box to get them used to it. Use the same litter your cat used in their old box to help them get used to it.

How do you clean the ModKat Top Entry box?

You’ll need to wash both the litter box and reusable liner with mild soap and water on about a weekly basis. You’ll also need to scoop the litter daily and clean everything out to ensure your cat has a fresh and clean place to go to the bathroom. ModKat recommends fully replacing the litter liner once every 3 months.
