When a group of kids found a little kitten wandering around alone outside their apartment block, they knew that something wasn't quite right.

She had apparently broken her rear legs in an earlier incident as they were wrapped up in crude casts.

So they took her home and asked their parents to save her.

The parents decided to get in touch with Kathy Hamel, the director of Arizona Shih Tzu and Small Breed Rescue.

“I knew the minute she arrived I would run her straight up to my vet,” said Kathy.

“When she was brought to me, there was a little girl maybe 4 years old who was one of her finders. She had named her Cupcake and I told her that I loved the name and would keep it!”

It was obvious that little Cupcake was in serious need of attention.

Kathy knew she wouldn’t have lasted much longer on her own and was glad the young kids acted so quickly.

It took about half an hour to remove the casts, one of them was wound so tightly that Cupcake must of been in considerable pain.

After being examined by the vet, everyone was shocked to discover that her legs weren’t actually broken at all.

They worked perfectly fine which meant that the casts were cruelly put on purposely.

It does make you wonder why anyone would do that to a tiny, helpless kitten.

Although her legs were fine, Cupcake was underweight, dehydrated and malnourished.

Luckily for Cupcake, she will remain at the rescue center while she regains the strength in her legs.

Because of the restriction of the casts, she needed time to re-train her body to walk on all fours again.

They thought she was around six weeks old and without her casts she weighed less than a pound. She had obviously not eaten for quite some time.

Now that she was being well looked after, the staff discovered that she was a sweet, easygoing kitten.

And her spirit was strong, despite everything she had been through.

“She is a tough little girl with a wonderful spirit,” shared Kathy.

“She has been so tolerant of all the pulling and washing and prodding and needles and thermometers and being handled by countless people, all who are only trying to help her."

"She purrs and craves attention and seems to hold no ill will towards humans for whatever they have done to her,” she added.

It would take time for CupCake to make a complete recovery, but she was eating well and slowly gaining weight.

But best of all, they had already found a family that wanted to adopt her.

For the time being, Cupcake would remain with Kathy until she had made a full recovery, but meanwhile she was allowed a sleepover to get to know her forever family.

She had a lovely time and everybody was pleased with her progress.

“She pushes her head against your finger to make you rub on her and scratch her head,” Hamel said.

“She loves to be petted but is so tiny you can only pet her with [a] finger or two and not a whole hand yet.”

As soon as she's made a full recovery she will be spayed and vaccinated, then her new family will be able to make it official.

She has come so far since the day that she was found alone on the street in a terrible state.

We are so happy that Cupcake has a wonderful life ahead of her with a family that already love her.
