His ears, once pristine, became destroyed by untreated ear mites that caused painful hematomas. His beautiful black and white fur—the source of his eventual name—became so severely matted it must have been torture to carry such weight with every step.
The streets hardened him, as they do all creatures forced to survive alone.
His gentle house cat nature slowly developed the wary instincts of a colony cat, though deep within that increasingly gruff exterior, a sweet soul waited patiently for someone to see past the damage.
A Fateful Decision
February 2025 brought a turning point. After thirteen long years, Panda made a choice that would change everything. When he encountered a trap set by rescuers, he didn't flee as a truly feral cat might.
Instead, this gentle giant was smart enough to recognize what his weary soul needed most: help. He walked into that trap not as a victim, but as a cat finally ready to trust again.
When Billy the Kitten Rescue received the call about this particular colony cat, they sensed something special. Something about Panda suggested he remembered what it meant to belong to someone.
Katie, an experienced foster mother already caring for six cats of her own, agreed to make Panda her first foster of 2025—a decision that would prove life-changing for both of them.
The Gentle Giant Emerges
The moment Katie met this massive teddy bear of a cat, his name became obvious.

The relief: they successfully removed all that painful matted fur, giving him a distinguished "mohawk" that made him look like an edgy gentleman with a new lease on life.
The challenge: Panda tested positive for FIV and was estimated to be fourteen years old, with severe periodontal disease that his age and condition made difficult to treat.
Love Without Conditions
Rather than dampening spirits, Panda's medical challenges only strengthened Katie's commitment. FIV positive doesn't mean a death sentence—it simply means a cat needs extra care and careful management around other cats.
Katie adapted her routine, keeping Panda safely separated from her six other cats while ensuring he received constant love and attention.
Their daily bathroom sessions became rituals of healing.
Katie would sit on the floor multiple times each day, talking softly, brushing his newly shortened fur, administering medications, and simply being present while Panda rediscovered what love meant.
