We hate to repeat ourselves but we are currently living through a post-covid time of high inflation and a much higher cost of living!

They are not generally on the cheap lists, but we did a bit of digging and think Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Grain-Free Dry cat food could fit the bill as a cheaper natural cat food. It's not organic certified but the brand does use organic ingredients where possible.

We have an 8-year old picky eater who has a habit of taking a few bites, looking at me in disgust and not eating another mouthful until we change his food up! Sound familiar?

So, at first I was thinking he would not take to it, especially as he is such a picky eater, but we were pleasantly surprised. He scoffed it down and soon ate it again the next day.

No dirty looks that day! 

So what is the make up of Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Grain-Free?

Of course,  do a test run! Test if your kitty likes the food because a handful of customers have complained their fussy eaters won’t touch the food - of course!

Although, the majority of reviewers find this product to be good for their kitties. 

But in my own personal experience, this is a winning premium cat food. We'd still rate our overall pick, the Castor & Pollux Organix Grain-Free as the best but that's down to it being slightly better value by weight.

If you're really looking for the no compromise organic wet cat food and are happy to pay the premium price then this is your choice.

5. Purina Beyond Natural Limited Ingredient Dry Cat Food

Picking an alternative dry organic cat food to our 'Value Pick' above - the Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Dry Food, used to be easy.

Purina, until very recently, made an excellent dry fully organic cat food called Purina Beyond Organic High Protein Adult Dry Cat Food, which was notable for being 100% organic ingredients and USDA certified as such.

At the moment, it is no longer available, although the excellent wet variety (see the next pick below) still is.

There has been no statement about why this is currently not on sale, but we suspect it is to do with the cost of the ingredients that have skyrocketed in the last year. It may come back, but we have no news either way.

The good news is that there was always an all-natural variant kibble in the Purina Beyond range and that is still available. And it's great.

In our survey we found that many in our community who had been using the organic dry recipe had switched to the natural and found that their cats were still happy to eat it - and, of course, this natural formula is very close to the discontinued one in terms of ingredient quality.

The ingredients in Purina Beyond’s dry cat food are limited. But not to worry! Your cat still gets all the necessary nutrients. The chicken variety is perfect even if your cat is a picky eater as it comes with healthy protein.  The chicken is steroid free and high quality.

The dry cat food products from Purina Beyond usually contain oatmeal, whole barley, and brown rice, among others (but, importantly, no wheat grain). These ingredients come packed with important vitamins and minerals. Purina’s cat food includes probiotics too. This can help your cat have good digestion and can help with IBS.

Although other Purina brands have been recalled previously, Purina Beyond has not yet faced any product recall.

It might not be organic, but Purina ensures that the Beyond range uses the best quality traceable natural ingredients. As an alternative natural dry cat food, this is a great option.

6. Beyond Purina Organic Wet Cat Food Pate

With the discontinuation of the Purina Beyond dry recipe, it's well worth considering the remaining wet variant in the Purina Beyond organic line, which we have always recommended.

We tested the organic chicken and sweet potato formula, as this is a very popular choice among our community who insist on a 100% organic diet..

This recipe stands out because it's made from 100% organic ingredients. It's also a single-protein recipe, with certified organic chicken as the primary source of protein. The inclusion of organic sweet potato adds a touch of natural sweetness that cats enjoy, but also provides beneficial nutrients.

This wet cat food provides an organic, wholesome choice for your feline friend that will also take care of their hydration needs. The chicken used is organic, steroid-free, and high-quality. It's on a par with our other organic wet food recommendations in this test and it's a close run thing between this and our overall pick from Castor & Pollux.

In the end, we rated Castor & Pollux above this just because it fared better in our tests with more of our cats, and because they are a small producer with a real mission to make the very best wet organic cat food.

That said, this Purina Beyond organic wet food comes a very close second and will likely be a touch less expensive.

7. Instinct Grain-Free Dry Cat Food

Instinct’s main selling points are that its recipes are primarily made from all natural and raw ingredients and that they mostly contain animal protein. Of course, that means this is a natural dry cat food, rather than an organic one, but it fully deserves its inclusion in this test because of the quality of the ingredients in this food.

The brand’s chicken or duck varieties have three times more animal protein than other brands. As the name suggests, it’s free of grains as well.

The ingredients do include peas as a solution for avoiding grains. But unlike other brands, Instinct avoids the use of legumes or starch. This keeps the carbohydrates in the food at a low level.

As you'll probaly be aware, your cat needs fiber from its food sources. Instinct’s dry food uses tomato pomace as the source of fiber. Tomato pomace comes as a by-product when tomatoes are processed and this is a high quality ingredient to add for that purpose.

This brand also helps work on the nutrition profile of your furry friend. Instinct dry cat food has several supplements for vitamins and minerals.

The food also comes with probiotics to help with your cat’s digestion. The probiotic quantity is around 3.5 million CFU for every serving.

8. Tender & True Organic Chicken & Liver Dry Cat Food

Cats love chicken. Tender & True goes right to the heart of that passion for meat with their dry food.

Their main ingredient is organic chicken, so the meat your cat gets is from birds that have not been given any antibiotics. Your furry friend will get some much-needed protein and other important nutrients from organic chicken. 

Along with the chicken, the brand includes chicken broth in its ingredients. Chicken broth ensures the cat food also has vital vitamins and minerals. It also increases the moisture in the food. 

The other ingredient in this cat food is chicken liver. It is a fantastic source of amino acids and iron, which your cat will need to remain healthy. 

The other ingredients include organic pea protein and pea flour. Pea may not be best for all cats, so you may want to first test the product with a small pack.

It is an easier way to get fiber but not all cats can digest it. In the unlikely event that your cat starts vomiting after eating the snack, then this product may not be for you.

We really rate Tender and True as a brand of organic cat food, whatever the recipe you go for. They made the first ever USDA certified organic cat food and have remained true to their values of making the best organic cat food for your kitties.

9. Tender & True Antibiotic-Free Turkey & Brown Rice Recipe Canned Cat Food

Sticking with Tender and True as pioneers of organic cat food, we tested their organic canned cat food recipe - and were impressed!

As we referenced above when looking at their organic dry recipe, chicken is the most regularly used meat in cat food. But, this particular product from Tender & True uses turkey instead. The company still ensures they are organic turkeys and free of any antibiotics (hence the name).

Water Sufficient is its next ingredient. Although this refers to the amount of water required for processing, it also means you know your cat will get water from this food. The product also includes brown rice flour and pea flour too., but no corn, wheat or soy. It's also hormone, color and preservative free. You cannot doubt their commitment to high-qaulity, all organic and additive free formulas.

Most of the protein that comes from this product is animal-based. But the amount of protein it offers is noticeably lower than the average among products available in the organic recipe market. It has a much higher amount of fat, fiber, and carbs compared with the average. 

They also use agar-agar gel to naturally bind the ingredients. The product also includes supplements for important vitamins and minerals.

Tender sand True blaze their own trail with what they include in their recipes. Your cat might not take to the flavors, but there's only one way to find that out! If they do, this is another great wet organcic cat food option.

10. Hound & Gatos Natural Wet Cat Food

My cat loves wet food. Every time there is even a crinkle of the wet food pouch or the sound of a can being popped open, he comes bouncing all the way to where I am.

It’s like he is always on the alert for the delicious meat to be out, so he can feast on it. Maybe he even thinks I’ll eat it if he doesn’t show up!

Considering how much he likes to gobble up the wet food, I try to ensure he gets recipes from brands that he loves but that are also using all high quality ingredients.

Hound & Gatos fits that bill and is one of the recipes he loves and that was also well ,liked from our community survey. This formula is 100% chicken-based. They mix chicken meat and liver with the broth and the whole recipe is virtually all meat!

The natural binding used is agar-agar gel, which is one of the safest when you compare it with various other binding gums.
