Finding hotels that allow cats can be trickier than it seems. When we’re on the road with our feline friends, enjoying road trips and outdoor adventures, we’ve noticed a lot of “pet-friendly” hotels aren’t as welcoming to kitties as they are to canines.

While there are hundreds of “dog-friendly” hotels out there, only a few are willing to cater to our cats and all the accessories (litter boxes and scratching posts) that come with them.

hotels that allow cats

Fortunately, there are some cat-friendly hotel chains (and standout independents) that are more than willing to accept visitors of all shapes, sizes, and breeds.

We’ve done all the work for you, checking out policies, and even visiting some impressive cat-friendly hotels ourselves, to help you plan your next vacation with your furry friend.

Things to Remember When Looking for Hotels that Allow Cats

Before we look at some of the best hotels that allow cats, let’s start with a few quick tips. Travelling is always more fun with a fluffy friend by your side, but remember that there are some caveats.

Certain cats won’t be suitable for travel. Those kitties who experience a lot of stress during times of change may be more comfortable left at home.

Additionally, while a lot of the hotels that allow cats, as we’ll mention below have some great amenities and resources for your furry friend, remember to pack accordingly.

You may need to add a few key items to your luggage, such as a portable litter pan (with a scoop and litter), water and food dishes, food and treats, and of course, toys and mini scratching posts.

Here are a few other handy tips to help you when you’re choosing where to stay:

  • Check the policies: We’ve reviewed the pet-friendly policies of the hotels and chains below, but things can change. Make sure you know how many cats your hotel allows, whether they have weight or size restrictions, and whether there are any additional fees.
  • Inspect the room: Always check the room before letting your cat out of its carrier. You don’t want to spend your entire vacation trying to lure your furry friend out of a hiding spot behind a headboard or in a cupboard you weren’t aware of.
  • Prepare for a nervous visitor: Even adventurous cats can have a hard time getting used to a new place. You might want to invest in a nice calming spray or pheromone diffuser to help your cat settle in. Make sure you can set the “do not disturb” sign up on your door when they’re exploring too, so you can avoid any sudden frights.
  • Clean up after yourself: Even if a hotel accepts feline visitors, they might not be happy cleaning up after them. Expect to have to scoop the litter and get rid of any unexpected messes yourself.

Cat Friendly Hotel Chains?

So, do chain hotels allow cats? Yes, of course there are some that welcome our kitties, but which hotel chains are actually “cat friendly”.

Remember, there’s a big difference between “pet-friendly” and “cat-friendly”.

So if you want to do the research yourself – read the fine print.

Alternatively, here are all the top cat friendly hotel chains we’ve found that cater to cats.

1. Marriott International

With more than 1,500 hotels that accept cats and other pets to choose from, you have a great chance of finding a hotel that allows cats in the Marriott collection – and that’s just in the US.

Many of Mariott’s hotels cater to “well-mannered” pets of all sizes, including dogs, cats, and even birds. However, they do reserve the right to remove you and your pet if they get aggressive, or a little too loud.

Marriot offers residents a “pet in room” sign, which stops people from interrupting you when you’re trying to relax. Plus, some chains even come with amenities to help keep your kitty comfy and happy. For instance,

The Westin comes with its very own cozy dog bed. Aloft Hotels even has its own pet program, with treats and complimentary toys for your animals.

Pet-friendly policies vary for each brand and location, so reach out to the customer service team before you book your stay.

2. Kimpton Hotels

Kimpton Hotels is a paradise for pet lovers. They’re one of the few hotel chains that don’t discriminate on which type of animal you can bring along for your road trip. You can bring your fish, dog, bird, or virtually any other type of animal, provided they’re well-behaved.

Kimpton’s policy says they welcome any animal that “fits through the door”. Plus, they offer visitors plenty of goodies to help keep pets cozy.

There are plush pet-bed loaners, food and water bowls, mats, and concierge lists of pet-friendly restaurants to help you out.

You can even bring your pets to the nightly wine reception at certain hotels. Plus, Kimpton will help set you up with professional caregivers if you need to leave your cat in the room while you’re out exploring.

3. Comfort Inn

Many Comfort Inn Hotels will welcome up to two pets, although there is a maximum weight restriction for each of your furry friends. Plus, you may have to pay a nightly fee for your companion to stay the night with you.

Technically, Comfort Inn hotels do allow cats to visit many of their locations, but there are restrictions on which breeds are allowed.

Plus, your cat won’t get any extras offered as part of the package, like treats and food, so you’ll need to bring those yourself.

Additionally, your cat isn’t allowed on the bed or in common areas throughout the hotel, so if you love cuddling with your kitty at night, you might want to look elsewhere. All that being said, Comfort Inn hotels can still be an affordable option for pet lovers, if you’re just looking for a brief stay.

4. Best Western

Best Western is one of those hotel chains that seems to prefer dogs over cats. Canines are welcomed at more than 1,600 locations throughout the Caribbean, Canada, and the US. However, only a handful of those locations also cater to kitties.

If you want to stay at a cat-friendly hotel, you can search for “pet-friendly” locations on the Best Western website, and then reach out for extra information.

Your cat will need to be approved for a visitor, but once they are, the service team is eager to help give you both a great experience.

They can give you recommendations on where to go if you’re looking for pet-friendly stores, parks, and restaurants in the region.

However, you will need to pay anywhere up to $30 extra per room for your pet to stay with you, and there’s a deposit to ensure your cat doesn’t cause any damage.

5. La Quinta Inn and Suites

The La Quinta Inn chain says they welcome all kinds of pets, including dogs and cats – however, you can only accommodate two animals per room. Plus, some locations do have a weight limit, and others will charge you an extra fee for your furry friend.

On the plus side, some of La Quinta’s hotels offer access to special treats, and even a “pet relief” area in the front of the property, like the Ocean City location.

There’s also a great service team who can help accommodate any special requests you might have.

You will need to bring your own litter box and clean it yourself, and you’re probably going to need to take other accessories with you too, like toys and food, so keep that in mind.

6. Quality Inn

Both Comfort Inn and Quality Inn are owned by the same parent company (Choice Hotels), so their pet policies are pretty similar. Once again, you’re allowed to bring up to two pets – and there are weight limits to consider. Plus, your pet won’t be allowed on your bed with you.

Certain pets will need to be approved prior to arrival, so depending on the breed of your cat, you might need to get in touch in advance.

On the plus side, Choice Hotels seems to be pretty helpful when it comes to traveling with your pets.

The company even shares blogs, guides, and tips on its website to help you plan your vacation, and keep your kitty comfy.

7. DoubleTree

Hilton’s DoubleTree hotel chain offers hundreds of pet-friendly hotels all around the globe.

Most of these generally cater to dogs more than cats though, so it’s worth keeping that in mind and double-checking any policies before you start your trip.

Though DoubleTree doesn’t offer any unique amenities or extras to your feline friends, it will usually accommodate them if they’re well-behaved. Just remember, there’s a non-refundable pet cleaning fee that can vary from one location to the next.

8. Four Seasons

There are plenty of Four Seasons properties that allow both cats and dogs to travel right alongside you.

There are pet-free zones around the hotel, so you might not be able to access every room, but there are plenty of amenities on offer in the locations that support cats.

For instance, Four Seasons has its own “canine menu”, which despite its name, tailors to both dogs and cats.

They can also offer a pet-sitting service if you want to take some time out without your feline companion. Some locations even offer grooming services!

Some locations do require you to pay an extra fee for your pet and will ask you to keep your cat crated or locked in the bathroom during housekeeping.

9. Motel 6

If you’re looking for an affordable place to stay on your next adventure, Motel 6 could be just the solution. The company’s policies allow many of its locations to accept both canine and feline visitors. In fact, you can bring up to two cats to some places at no additional charge.

Keep in mind, that variations of the hotel chain can also support cats, but they do charge an extra fee for every furry visitor.

While Motel 6 doesn’t offer a lot of extra treats or amenities for your pet, they have created a soothing digital playlist to keep your friend calm in the room.

Compared to other budget-friendly brands, Motel is definitely a great choice for pet owners who don’t want to leave their cat at home.

10. Loewes Hotels

Loewes love pets, and that’s clear to see in their flexible pet policies. As soon as you and your furry friend check into a pet-friendly location, they’ll receive bowls, placemats, and treats, so you don’t have to worry about packing too many extras.

There’s a gourmet room service menu for cats and dogs, and you can access everything from collars and litter boxes to litter, and water bowls at the front desk.

You’ll also get handy “pet-in-room” signs to put on your door and recommendations on nearby pet-friendly locations.

The only downside is that Loewes can only accommodate up to two pets per room, and there may be extra fees at some locations.

Hotels that Allow Cats: The Verdict

If you’re traveling with your feline friend, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a pet-friendly hotel or chain with the list above.

However, if you want to explore a little further, remember you can always use “pet-friendly” filters on sites like Booking.com and Airbnb. Just remember to double-check that pet friendly also means “cat friendly”.

Enjoy exploring the US with your furry friends, and don’t forget to snap some Instagram-worthy shots of them enjoying their vacation!
