Meet Cotton the cat! He had been living blind on the streets until somebody rescued him and gave him the help he needed to regain his vision.

They had no idea that he had such beautiful eyes.

Cotton was found wandering outside a private home in Florida, the owner of the property, Joe, came outside and couldn’t believe what he saw.

“He said Cotton came out of nowhere and started eating from the bowl of food he had for his cat. He said Cotton seemed very hungry, like if he had not eaten in days,” explains Carmen Morales Weinberg, founder of Animal Friends Project.

Joe realised that the cat was suffering from a severe case of mange. The poor kitty’s eyes were crusted shut and he was unable to see.

So he rushed to his house to get a cat carrier and placed some food inside. Cotton was so hungry that he walked right into the carrier.

Joe then posted a plea in a local group on Facebook and Carmen came across the post through a friend.

She knew she had to help as she had treated cats before suffering from the same condition.

Early the next morning Carmen picked him up and drove immediately to her vet. It was confirmed that he was suffering from mange, he was also very dehydrated and malnourished.

This previously unlucky kitty couldn’t open his eyes because of the disease, and it was unsure long he had been wandering the streets completely blind.

Carmen says: “He purred the whole time they were examining him! He received antibiotics, a dose of Revolution and fluids and we went home. Fortunately, I had a spare bathroom where Cotton could stay.”

“He was very skinny but fortunately, he ate well and was in good spirits. He must have sensed we were trying to help him and he loved to be touched.”

“My husband Don, son Carlos and daughter Elisa, are used to dealing with cats with many illnesses and we knew that if we took some precautions, that we could still touch and love Cotton to help him heal.”

Before long, the crust on his ears started to come off and the brave little boy began to heal.

“We put Coconut oil to soothe his skin and gave him lots of water and canned food to keep him hydrated. Cotton stayed hunched over for days and days and seemed very uncomfortable.

It was hard seeing him in that condition, knowing only time would heal him. Little by little he started to gain weight. It was a nice surprise to see that he had one blue eye and one yellow eye. His hair started to grow again.”

“Cotton is very vocal and he would make noise to let us know that he wanted attention. He loves people and searches for attention. He wants to be where you are.”

UPDATE: After three full months in recovery, 6-year-old Cotton had formed a special bond with Carmen. He followed her everywhere and slowly became comfortable and confident.

But when other people were around he became nervous and timid.

“If I go into another room, he waits outside the door talking,” Morales said.

“He sleeps with me, he stays by my side all of the time … Him and I have a wonderful relationship. He’s a good communicator and loves meowing at me.”

It was becoming clear that Carmen and Cotton had formed a special bond and when it was time for him to be put up for adoption, she just couldn't go through with it.

She knew how much this adorable kitty had been through and felt it wouldn't be fair for him to go through it all over again.

Cotton was so happy to become a permanent member of Carmen's family

And now spends his days relaxing, playing and following his mom around everywhere she goes.
