Cat Steals Owner’s Treadmill and Refuses to Give It Back, Now Demands Daily Workouts

Most cats are content with sunbeams and windowsills, spending their days in luxurious stretches of doing absolutely nothing.

But Oliver has never been most cats.

The story begins simply enough. His owner, Ovya Barani, brought home a walking pad, determined to stay active while working remotely.

It was a reasonable purchase, a sensible investment in her health. What she didn't anticipate was the intense fascination it would spark in her two-month-old kitten.

From the moment the treadmill arrived, Oliver was mesmerized. The moving belt captivated him in a way that toys and treats never had.

He watched it with the intensity of a scholar studying ancient texts, his eyes tracking every rotation. Cautiously, he extended one paw, then another, testing the strange surface.

His confidence built gradually, day by day, until finally he made the leap—hopping onto the moving pad beside his human.

Ovya found it endearing at first. Her little companion just wanted to spend time with her, she reasoned.

How could she not be charmed by a kitten who chose her workout sessions as bonding time? But Oliver had grander ambitions!

oliver 14

The takeover was swift and absolute. These days, the walking pad belongs exclusively to him. His owner has been thoroughly displaced, relegated to the role of treadmill operator rather than user.

Every attempt she makes to reclaim her equipment is met with creative interference. Oliver has claimed his territory, and he defends it with unwavering commitment. Perhaps she should have seen it coming.

The warning signs were there from the beginning.

oliver 11

She'd wandered into the animal shelter without a plan, just browsing. And there he was—a tiny ball of fur with the swagger of a cat ten times his size.

While other kittens cowered or played coy, Oliver paraded through that shelter like he owned the place.

He spotted his future owner and made his move immediately, climbing all over her with zero hesitation. There was no courtship period, no consideration. Ovya took him home that same day.

Remote work proved to be perfect timing. It meant constant companionship, endless opportunities for attention. And Oliver required attention the way plants require sunlight.

When he wanted something, he would position himself directly beside his owner and launch into a meowing symphony accompanied by an unblinking stare.

The performance continued until his demands were met. Subtlety, it seemed, was not part of his programming.

oliver 3

His owner's roommate learned this quickly. Oliver developed a habit of repeatedly leaping at her doorknob, determined to crack the code of door-opening. It was only a matter of time before he succeeded.

The constant need for stimulation was exhausting. Playtime, mealtime, more playtime, more mealtime—the cycle was relentless. Which is why the walking pad became a godsend for everyone involved.

oliver 8

Initially, his owner worried. He was so small, and the moving belt seemed potentially dangerous. But Oliver proved himself immediately capable, handling the treadmill with surprising grace.

She stays nearby during his sessions, keeping watch, but he's never given her reason for concern.

oliver 9

Now they have a routine. Oliver doesn't request treadmill time—he demands it. Someone must turn on the machine when he decides it's exercise hour. But what, exactly, is he training for?

Ovya has a theory, and her name is Buttercup.

oliver 16

Buttercup belongs to her boyfriend, and Oliver is hopelessly smitten. He's putting in the work, getting in shape, presumably preparing to impress her.

Unfortunately, Buttercup remains unimpressed. The romance is decidedly one-sided, though his owner insists they're making progress.

oliver 15

The Buttercup situation reflects a broader pattern in Oliver's social life. Other cats tend to be standoffish with him, maintaining their distance with typical feline aloofness.

But dogs? Dogs adore him instantly. They see Oliver and immediately want to be best friends.

oliver 17

It's a common observation among everyone who meets him—Oliver is remarkably doglike.

His friendliness is off the charts for a cat. He approaches life with golden retriever enthusiasm trapped in a feline body.

oliver 5

Ovya always knew he was special. From that first day at the shelter, she sensed this cat had star quality. But the treadmill obsession? That twist nobody saw coming.

oliver 12

Oliver is magnificently weird, and his owner wouldn't change a thing.

The quirks, the boundless energy, the commandeered exercise equipment—it all adds up to one extraordinary cat.

oliver 7

In a world full of ordinary cats doing ordinary cat things, Oliver chose a different path.

And that path just happens to be a treadmill set to a brisk walking pace.

oliver 18

Because why nap when you could be running? Why lounge when you could be training? Why be ordinary when you could be Oliver?
