Meet Charlie! He looks like a tough street cat but there is something about him that is so sweet, like a little old bear.

He had been living on the cold, hard streets of Brooklyn for many years so two cat rescuers decided it was time to give him a chance of finding him a forever home so they set about trying to trap him.

Their mission was successful but they had no idea how his temperament would be around humans.

They tested the waters by first putting a finger into his cage and petting his head.

Charlie didn’t resist but he appeared very shut down and withdrawn.

He was taken to the vet for an examination where they discovered he was around 8 years old.

Whilst on the table the vet was constantly petting his head for reassurance and all of a sudden he began to push his head into her hand.

Then he started rolling around in a happy way, he even began to purr, progress had been made.

The next step was to begin socializing him, and to find out just how friendly he could be.

Charlie still wasn’t a normal cat, you could say he was a bit rough round the edges, he had to learn all over again how to live with humans.

There were definite trust issues, he must of been abused or let down by humans in the past as he would always run back to his cage, there he felt safe.

Then one night his carer made a breakthrough, she was able to pick him up and hold him like a baby, he started purring and actually seemed to really like it.

His trust issues were diminishing and slowly he came round to the idea that it was okay to hang out with humans.

Thanks to the hard work of the people at Sunset Park Cats, Charlie is now ready for adoption.

Let’s hope someone will give him a forever home where he can feel safe and loved.
