The Munchkin cat gets its name from the little people in that great film The Wizard of Oz and is a relatively new breed in the cat world. As well as having extremely short legs they are described as being sweet natured, people-orientated, intelligent and out going, extremely playful and love being handled which makes them a great addition to the family when there are children in the house.

Because of the shortness of their legs, which is caused by a genetic mutation, many critics showed concern over health issues especially when the breed became officially recognised in 1995 by The International Cat Foundation. These concerns are actually unfounded and many studies have shown that Munchkin cats generally lead happy and healthy lives.
