Who is Crookshanks From Harry Potter?

Every Harry Potter fan adores Crookshanks, who was Hermione Granger's pet cat. This half-kneazle magical kitty made every viewer fall in love with him instantly.

However, the most interesting thing about Crookshanks is his ability to solve problems on his own without any external aid.

Accept it or not, we all wanted our own little Crookshanks at home after he was first introduced in the Harry Potter witch and wizard series. This lion-like little boy left all of the viewers in awe with his on-screen presence and personality.

Hermione's Cat

Hermoine Granger in Harry Potter purchased Crookshanks from Magical Menagerie in 1993 when she went to the shop for owl shopping.

Hermione's Cat

In the story, the saleswoman tells Hermione that he had been in the shop for a long time because he was unwanted.

Can you imagine?

The most famous pet in the series was stated as unwanted.

The most crucial role played by Crookshanks was in the events that happened on 6th June 1994.

Of course, we all remember the Second Wizarding War! Well, Crookshanks stayed at the Burrow during the height of it.

Sadly, we don’t know what happened to him after the war, but we can assume here that he was returned to Hermione.

What About His Physical Appearance?

Harry Potter states that Crookshanks can either be a very big cat or quite a small tiger.

This statement itself describes his physical appearance. In the story, he is described as ginger-colored, very big, bandy-legged, and with a squashed head.

In another instance, Harry Potter described Crookshanks's fluffy head as if he had run headlong into a brick wall!

With this, it is also described that Crookshanks had a bottlebrush tail and a pair of striking yellow eyes.

Well, by the description, it is a big shock that he had been stated as unwanted. I am quite sure that everyone in our world would love to have such a beautiful pet in their home.

Crookshanks Personality

Crookshanks is told to be extremely intelligent and very playful, and he loved catching spiders, attacking chess pieces, and chasing gnomes.

Being highly intelligent, he helped Sirius Black in exposing Peter Pettigrew, who was disguised as Scabbers, Ron's beloved pet rat!

In this incident, Ron Weasley first accused him of being mad as he thought Crookshanks simply wanted to eat the Scabbers.

But at the same time, Sirius Black claimed him to be the most intelligent cat he had ever come across.

This big cat was very affectionate to the ones he liked, which is the reason that he acted as a shield to Sirius when Harry Potter planned to kill him.

But Crookshanks eventually started to like Harry and rested on his lap occasionally. With this, he was also very moody towards those who intentionally or unintentionally threw him off their lap.

The Etymology of the Name!

Crookshanks is derived from the words crook meaning a bend, and shank meaning the lower part of the legs. So, the name is a reference to the cat’s bandy legs.

No one is quite sure, but the name seems to be derived from a Scottish surname, Cruikshanks, as it is pronounced the same.

A great name for a cat for sure, but only one of the many Harry Potter cat names you could choose!

Interesting Crookshanks Facts

Crookshanks was a very famous pet character in the Harry Potter series.

We bet that are some facts that you would have never noticed about the character. We have listed some below!

Strong Moral Sense

Crookshanks has been a character with a strong moral sense in the series. For instance, he was found judging Harry and Ron when they were building up the predictions for their divination homework.

He is very good at recognizing and despising cheating, along with his strong sixth sense of good and evil.

This makes Crookshanks a great fit for Hermione, as she is known to be intelligent and cunning while being protective and loyal to her friends.

Stopping Others from What they Shouldn’t do or hear!

Everyone must have remembered the extendable ears (eavesdropping device) by Fred and George in the Order of the Pheonix.

This was a long piece of string with an ear on its other end.

When Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny Weasley, and the twins tried listening to the Order’s meeting with the magical device, Crookshanks came in and knocked one of the ears off the string.

At the time, he acted like a playful little cat, but he prevented Harry from the confidential information related to Voldemort that Harry wasn’t supposed to hear.

Despite being intelligent and aggressive towards disbelieving individuals, Crookshanks also proved to be the ones removing their owner from harm’s way and leading to safety.

Do you remember events at the Shrieking Shack?

This is exactly where he aided Hermione and her friends through the incident while also leading them back safely to Hogwarts castle.

This makes him fearless in protecting the ones he trusts, just as his lion-like appearance and personality.

A Great Judge

Remember when Crookshanks detected that Scabbers was no rat?

He recognized Scabbers’ true nature without any difficulty. The fact that he always wanted to distance Scabbers from Harry and his friends proves that he was the only one who correctly perceived Ron’s pet as Peter Pettigrew in an Animagus form.

Without this great judging power of Crookshanks, Voldemort would have been able to access Harry much more easily, as Scabber’s secret identity wouldn’t have been revealed at the right time.

This would have resulted in a horrible turn of events in the series for sure!

Crookshanks: Do You Want One?

Crookshanks character was played by a male and a female red Persian cat “Crackerjack” and “pumpkin” in the Harry Potter movies.

Persian cats are known to be great home pets. Along with their beautiful lion-like appearance, these little angels are quite intelligent, just like Crookshanks.

If you are obsessed with Hermione’s cat in the Harry Potter series, then you must go for a cute adorable Persian cat as well.

That is actually what I did to have my Crookshanks at my home!
