Anyone who has ever lost a pet will recognise this feeling.
A cat called Little Andrew was photographed holding hands with his human on their last car ride together to the vet.
His human, known as abernha3 on Reddit, wrote that Little Andrew was 15 and a half years old, about 83 in cat years and had been getting gradually weaker and more ill.
“He held our hands on his last trip to the vet,” abernha3 wrote on Reddit. “Little Andrew was much stronger than his mom and I.”
More than 280 comments were left on the Reddit post from fellow animal lovers, offering their condolences and many sharing their own similar stories.
“It’s amazing how they can tell when that final vet trip comes,” one person wrote. “Mine knew and was at peace about it, like yours was.”
Another said: “I lost my baby, a Russian Blue two years ago. He looked just like your kitty. He was with me for 18 years. There’s a special love there that you cannot explain. My wholehearted condolences.”
And one person wrote: “That is so beautiful. It made me cry.”
The man, who appears to be from Colorado, replied thanking everyone for their condolences.
“Thanks all. Little Andrew was my junior. He was 15 and a half and loved everyone, but just got old and sick over the last year,” he wrote.
“He purred every day of his life and when he lost that, I knew it was time. Always sad to lose a friend. Sorry for everybody else’s losses as well.”
