So, we bought one and sent it to Holly, who pointed out that she already had one and had been using it for several years.

Why Do People Love This Aumuca Cat Brush?

I won’t regurgitate the details of the 14,000 plus 5-star reviews on Amazon about this cat slicker brush here. But, without exception, those people giving it a 5-star review love it, and say that their cats love to be groomed with it.

When we asked our followers what they loved about it, they echoed Holly‘s verdict in her Aumuca cat brush review video above. 

Firstly, it’s highly effective at its job of grooming your cat and removing the loose fur trapped in their coat. Aumuca claims that the brush will remove more than 95% of loose cat hair, and having seen the results, I believe it.

If you have a long-haired cat and need to groom it to remove its fur and undercoat, this brush, as Holly points out, does a perfect job of reaching that fur.

Then, of course, it has this specific design feature where you press the button to push the collected fur off the bristles. That is a highlight for many: not having to pick the fur out of your brush and, as Holly says, avoiding the ‘stabby’ effect on the end of your fingers, as you do with other brushes that have sharp bristles. 

The cleaning feature, at the push of a button, also obviously means that it will be spotless for the next use, and having a clean brush at the start of a cat's grooming session is a significant benefit.

The next feature that everybody raved about is how the bristles are stiff but protected by small plastic covers on the ends, so they managed to do the job of effectively grooming your cat without ever risking harming them.

I don’t know if the fact that the bristles are angled has a medical reason, but it does seem that they go deep into the coat of your cat, and clearly, they grab the fur well. I have also noticed that the steel of the bristles seems to be a little bit thicker than many other brushes, and they have not deformed or bent at all in the time I’ve been using this Aumuca cat brush.

Our community also repeatedly mentioned that the brush is a nice piece of design - it is easy to hold, quite pleasant to use, and even pleasant to look at. Perhaps that’s not a big deal for most people, but for some, a product's aesthetics matter.

Some people like the hanging strap. I guess that suits how they store it. It doesn’t bother me one way or the other. What I do know from having had this for a pretty long while is that the quality of the materials and construction means that this feels like a product that’s going to last for many more years.

Like Holly, I have mine in white, but it is available in three colours, the other two being lavender and teal.

The only things that people mentioned as negatives were that the nice-looking design meant that the brushing area was quite a solid, flat area that wasn’t flexible, so it may seem a little rough to some cats. I’ve never experienced that, but I can see why that might happen with a particularly small cat.

A relatively broad flat brush area also means you do have to be a little bit more careful when brushing around your cat's head. The brush is as big as my cat’s head, but it still works perfectly.

My cat is a short hair, and of course, regular grooming is less critical for her than a long-haired cat. Holly loves this brush, but she does note that she needs to brush quite thoroughly and regularly to make sure that the bristles do reach into her long-haired cat’s undercoat.

The only common concern raised was that this is not a cheap cat brush. Depending on whether there are any current offers, it will cost between $18 and $25. When you consider that you can buy a cat brush for less than $5, you know you’re buying a premium product.

But then, it’s worth it.

Why You Need To Groom Your Cat?

While it’s true that cats spend much of their time meticulously grooming themselves, that doesn’t mean you should leave it all up to them.

Your cat is doing a great job of keeping himself clean, but regular grooming with an effective cat brush will go deeper into their coat than they can. This is especially true of long-haired cats.

Regular grooming and brushing will effectively remove loose hair and fur in both their top and undercoats, catch tangles before they become matted, and also help lift out dander and trapped dirt.

Matted hair is painful for your cat and can lead to skin infections if not dealt with. It happens very quickly on long-haired cats who are not groomed.

Even on shorthaired cats, the benefits of grooming are worthwhile because the brushing helps distribute their natural oils around their coat and gives it a healthy shine while stimulating blood flow to the skin.

Another benefit of grooming your cat is that it is a meaningful bonding activity. You will be petting and stroking your cat gently while softly talking to keep it calm as you brush it, which can strengthen your bond with it. 

This close-up time is also an opportunity to look for signs of other health issues, such as fleas, skin infections, or perhaps a lump, that you might otherwise not notice.

Grooming Reduces Cat Hairballs

Perhaps the greatest benefit of regular grooming of your cat, especially long-haired breeds, is that it is a surefire way to reduce the likelihood of hairballs.

All cats swallow loose fur when they are grooming themselves, and this ingested hair can form hairballs in their stomach. Hairballs are often just an unpleasant mess on your kitchen floor that you have to clear up and are not a medical problem for your cat.

However, they can lead to complications such as intestinal blockages and constipation and that, in turn, can have further medical effects for your cat.

Therefore, anything that you can do to reduce the amount of hair that your cat swallows is a sensible medical precaution for your cat’s health. Brushing away loose hair is clearly a great start.

What is a Cat Slicker Brush?

I referred to the Aumuca cat brush as a cat slicker brush at the top of this review.

But that is a term that you may not have heard before, so I thought I’d explain what it is and the difference between a slicker brush and the other types of cat deshedding brush that you can buy.

What we mean by the term ‘slicker brush’ is a brush with fine, short bristles that are closely spaced on a usually completely flat brush surface. The term ‘slicker’ refers to how these brushes ‘slick’ or smooth out your cat’s fur.

The bristles on a slicker brush are generally made from metal and are usually angled or bent to reach a cat’s undercoat.

As with most cat grooming tools, the purpose of the slicker brush is to remove loose fur throughout your cat’s coat, detangle any knots and remove any matted hair.

The design of the fine-angled bristles means that the brush can penetrate deep into your cat’s coat so that you are reaching the undercoat. The density of the bristles also has a massaging effect on your cat’s skin, which can stimulate blood circulation that, in turn, promotes a healthier, glossier coat.

Other deshedding brushes use a different style of blade or comb-like structure to reach the deep undercoat.

These are generally designed more specifically only to reach the loose hair of your cat’s undercoat and are less of an overall grooming tool.

That style of bladed deshedding brush is more commonly used when a cat is shedding their coat and is always used less often than an overall grooming brush such as a slicker.

It’s important to know that if you have a long-haired cat that sheds a lot, then you may need a specific deshedding brush, as well as a regular grooming tool, such as the Aumuca cat brush.

The Aumuca does do an excellent job of deshedding, especially when used regularly, but in some circumstances, and with some cats, it might not get to all of the loose undercoat.
