A cat usually has five front toes and four back toes, but a polydactyl cat can have six (or more) toes. This is caused by a genetic abnormality that can be passed down from generation to generation. Most of these cats have extra toes on their front feet and sometimes on their back feet as well. It sometimes looks as if they are wearing mittens because they appear to have a thumb on their paw.
Polydactyl cats are known by various names such as: six-finger cats, mitten cats, cardi cats, thumb cats and even Hemmingway cats, named so because the writer Earnest Hemmingway had a least 50 polydactyl cats living with him at his house in Florida, US.
The trait can appear in any breed and their paws can vary greatly in shape, size and colour.
