The Maine Coon is one of the largest domesticated breeds of cat, and can reach as much as three times the size of your average domesticated kitty.

The breed has a distinctive physical appearance and is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America.

The breed is specifically “native” to the state of Maine, though in truth this large kitty was simply introduced there, and it has become the official state cat.

It is believed that the breed hitched a ride on the early settler ships from Europe and became the dominant breed in the North East states because it could survive the harsh weather and winter.

Their size and shaggy coat makes them a breed that seems to like water by adding buoyancy and keeping them warm.

It’s not rare to see a Maine Coon swim for fun!

This hardiness comes from the long insulating fur and the large paw pad, all of which makes them better able to cope with cold weather.

Maine coons are without a doubt very majestic and beautiful, they are also very sociable, but did you know they are also really playful?

When most cats lose their playfulness when they reach adulthood the Maine Coon continues to show their “kitten-side” throughout their lives.

Most are easy to train to walk on a leash and can also be taught behavior tricks.
